Nick Carraway (R)Nick Carraway is the narrator of the book. In this chapter he goes with Gatsby to the city. During the car ride, Gatsby mentions that Nick, without Nick's knowledge or consent, is to discuss with Jordan Baker later that afternoon, but does not tell topic of discussion. Nick becomes easily annoyed, even angry. It seems as if Nick feels used and is going to be asked to do something ridiculous for Gatsby. Contrary to what Nick says at the beginning of the book about how he is not judgemental, when Gatsby told Nick about being the son of wealthy people and educated at Oxford, Nick immediately judges him doubts the truth of Gatsby's words, "wonder[ing] if there wasn't something a little sinister about him, after all." (65)
Nick does not seem to feel any admiration, envy, or even pity for Gatsby, but rather it seems that Nick simply dislikes anyone with money. |
Tom Buchanan (R)
In this chapter, Daisy seems in love with Tom, frantic about his every move, worried about him being unfaithful. What is also revealed, is that Tom was with "one of the chambermaids in the Santa Barbara Hotel." (77)
Jordan Baker (L)
Nick meets with Jordan in the afternoon to discuss about Daisy and Gatsby. Jordan admired Daisy, saying she "was flattered that she wanted to speak to [her], because of all the older girls [she] admired the most." (75). At the end of the chapter, Nick holds Jordan close and kisses her.
